How long will my net last?

Typical lifespan: 3-5 years with regular use (this is a very conservative estimate in extreme climates with units being left in the upright position)!

Factors that affect net life:

  • Usage frequency: Daily BP wears nets faster than 2-3x weekly
  • Ball type: Dimpled practice balls are gentler than leather game balls
  • Exit velocity: High school/college hitters create more wear than youth hitters.
  • Sun exposure: UV rays degrade nets over time
  • Cold winter winds: Yes, winter winds are abrasive to netting
  • Storage: Folded nets and those taken indorors in the offseason last longer than those left exposed to weather

Signs you need a new net:

  • Holes larger than a softball
  • Fraying around high-impact areas
  • Significant sagging or stretching

Pro tip: Order your replacement net BEFORE you desperately need it. Keep one in storage so you’re never without your cage. (Keep and cut up your old net for future patches on any of your screens or foul ball areas. You can also cut up an 8′ x 8′ or 10′ x 10′ and hang it loosely behind your batting cage to protect the most vulnerable areas of your batting cage!

How often should I replace the vinyl skirt?

Average lifespan: 5-7 years

The vinyl skirt (bottom barrier) lasts longer than nets because it takes less direct ball impact. Replace when:

  • Tears or rips appear
  • UV damage causes brittleness
  • Grommets pull through
  • Significant fading affects the appearance
(its strength will likely be gone as well)

What maintenance does a batting turtle need?

Monthly during season:

  • Check all bolts and tighten if needed
  • Inspect the net for new damage
  • Clean vinyl skirt (soap and water once during pre-season)
  • Check wheel alignment and tire pressure

Off-season (annually):

  • Deep clean the entire frame & check net for mold, mildew, or animal damage
  • Lubricate moving parts (dollie system, fold points)
  • Inspect and replace worn hardware (especially zip ties & rope)
  • Remove and store net indoors, if practical)
  • Store covered and in a covered area if possible

Before storms:

  • Always drop the top!
  • Remove the vinyl skirt & net if practical
  • Lash it down and lean against any solid wall such as your dugout or maintenance building

After storms:

  • Always check for wind damage
  • Tighten any loosened connections
  • Inspect the net for stress tears

Time required: 15-20 minutes monthly, 1-2 hours annually

Can I do repairs myself?

Absolutely! Most repairs are DIY-friendly:

Easy repairs:

  • Net replacement (2 people, 1-2 hours)
  • Vinyl skirt replacement (2 people, 1 hour)
  • Wheel replacement (30 minutes)
  • Bolt tightening (15 minutes)

Repairs needing help:

  • Frame welding (professional required) – we offer frame parts here
  • Structural damage (contact us)

We provide: Assembly manuals and repair guides for all models right here!

🏗️ Setup & Transportation Questions

How easy is it to move a batting turtle?

VERY EASY with the right model! Here’s what to look for:

Key features for the easiest transport models:

  • Oversized turf tires (they roll smoother on dirt, grass and turf)
  • 180-degree locking side wheels (maneuverability and not often available)
  • Improved dollie system (pro units lift and roll with minimal effort)

Our New Pro Turtle: Designed specifically for daily transport with ALL these features included. Here’s a closer look!

How many people are needed to transport?

  • Most models: 1-2 people
  • Budget models: 2-3 people minimum

Can you roll it on grass? YES, though turf tire models are a bit easier and less damaging on soft ground.

How long does setup take?

First-time setup: 30-45 minutes (following assembly manual)

Daily setup (folding models):

  • Unfold and position: 3-5 minutes (2 people)
  • Fold and store: 3-5 minutes (2 people)

Once you have the routine down, Most coaches do it in under 5 minutes.

Does it fit through standard gates?

Our foldable models collapse to:

  • 5 feet tall (New Pro Turtle, D1 Foldable)
  • Fits through: Most standard 20 ft. gates. Those with smaller gate openings will learn to roll one of the side wheels and side through first, then maneuver as when moving a couch up a stairway. If it sounds complicated, it isn’t.
  • For those with very small gate openings, check out our Singles Hitter model. It was designed precisely for this purpose and is now used in colleges and high school programs

Measure before ordering:

  • Your gate opening (assuming you will store your unit outside the ballfield)
  • Your storage room ceiling height and doorway dimensions for indoor storage
  • Path from field to storage

Do I need to anchor it down?

For normal use: No anchoring required. The 500 to 900 pound weight keeps it stable.

HOWEVER – wind is your enemy!

You MUST secure it when:

  • Leaving it unattended overnight
  • Severe weather is forecasted
  • Wind speeds exceed 20-25 mph

Anchoring options:

  • Sandbags (100+ lbs total)
  • Stake-down kits (for fields)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Tie to fence or backstop or lash against any solid wall

NEVER leave unanchored in windy conditions. We’ve seen batting turtles roll across fields, flip over, and sustain damage. Don’t learn this lesson the hard way.

Can it be used indoors?

YES! But most aren’t:

📏 Size & Space Questions

What size batting turtle do I need?

Full-size models (recommended for high school and up):

  • 22′ deep x 18′ wide x 12′ high
  • Allows full swings and proper batting stance
  • Accommodates adult hitters comfortably

Compact models (easier to transport or for cost savings):

  • 13-18′ deep x 14-18′ wide x 10-12′ high
  • Fits younger & older players too
  • Easier to transport and store

How to choose:

  • High school, college, pro: Go full-size, no question
  • Youth & travel leagues: Compact works, but kids grow fast

When in doubt, go bigger. You’ll never regret having more space, but you’ll always regret cramped hitting conditions.

How much space do I need around the batting turtle?

Minimum space requirements:

Behind the cage:

  • 10-15 feet (for safe ball retrieval)
  • More space = safer operations

Sides:

  • 5-10 feet per side (for coaches, players waiting)
  • Prevents crowding and improves safety

Front:

  • 15-20 feet (pitching distance plus safety zone)

Total field space needed:

  • Minimum: 40′ x 35′ area
  • Ideal: 50′ x 40′ area

Will it fit in my storage area?

  • Top Down Collapsible Models Fold to 5 feet tall but remain wide & deep
  • Side wing models, like the Singles Hitter, easily fit through an 8 ft gate
  • Our accordion fold model, like our Home Plate, is only 2 ft. deep

🛡️ Safety & Durability Questions

Is a batting turtle safe for pitchers throwing BP?

Short answer: YES, but follow these safety rules:

Required safety equipment:

  • L-screen (always use between pitcher and batter)
  • Full-frame ricochet padding L Screen (protects from line drives)

Safe BP setup:

  1. L-screen positioned 15-20 feet from hitter
  2. Pitcher behind L-screen
  3. Batting turtle catches missed balls and foul tips
  4. Baffle net catches strike zone misses and tips

What about pitching machines? SAFER option – no pitcher at risk. Machines work great with batting turtles.

How does it handle high exit velocities?

Modern batting turtles are built for power hitters:

Our nets withstand:

  • 100+ mph exit velocities
  • College and pro-level hitters
  • Metal and composite bats
  • Thousands of impacts per season

Key features for durability:

  • #42 heavy-duty knotless netting (standard on quality models)
  • Double-dipped weather treatment (UV and abrasion resistant)
  • Oversized 10′ x 10′ baffle nets (catch high velocity tips and misses)

When cheap nets fail: Even our budget models use #36 or #42 netting so they don’t stretch and fail fast under high velocity. When in doubt, get a heavier net. Don;t own one? Add a baffle net, a thud pad, or a vinyl backstop with a strikezone (readily and affordably available).

Will it protect cars and buildings from foul balls?

YES – that’s exactly what it’s designed for!

Protection provided:

  • Typical 18-foot width catches most foul balls
  • Typical 12-foot height stops pop-ups and fly balls
  • Heavy vinyl skirt stops anything that skips or misses your net
  • Full enclosure when used with proper setup

Best practices:

  • Position perpendicular to traffic areas
  • Use in combination with backstops for maximum protection
  • Add warning signs for areas beyond cage

Real-world use: Schools use batting turtles to protect:

  • Parking lots during practice
  • Building windows
  • Adjacent fields and courts
  • Spectator areas
  • Protects your annual budget for baseballs!

What happens in high winds?

Wind is the #1 cause of batting turtle damage. Here’s the reality:

Wind speed guidelines:

  • 0-15 mph: Safe to use, no concerns
  • 15-25 mph: Use caution, consider anchoring
  • 25+ mph: STOP use immediately, secure cage, or move to storage

Why wind is dangerous:

  • Large surface area acts as a sail
  • 400 to 900 lbs sounds heavy, but the wind wins
  • Can roll, flip, or tumble, causing damage (happens every year)!

Wind damage prevention:

  1. Check weather before setup
  2. Anchor during windy days (sandbags, stakes, tie-downs)
  3. Never leave unattended in wind warnings
  4. Fold and secure or move to protected area during storms

Insurance note: Wind damage is typically NOT covered under product warranty. This is the user’s responsibility. School insurance typically covers these losses

How long will a batting turtle last?

Frame lifespan: 15-20+ years with proper care

Component lifespans:

  • Aluminum frame: 15-20+ years
  • Nets: 3-5 years minimum (replacement part)
  • Vinyl skirt: 5-7 years (replacement part)
  • Wheels/tires: 7-10 years (replacement part)
  • Padding: 5-8 years (replacement part)

Total cost of ownership over 15 years:

  • Initial purchase: $6,900
  • 1-3 net replacements: $1,300-2,600
  • 2 vinyl skirt replacements: $400-600
  • Miscellaneous parts: $500
  • Total: ~$9,000 for 15 years = $600/yearBottom line: Quality batting turtles are one of the best investments you can make for your program.

What is a Batting Turtle?

What exactly is a batting turtle?

A batting turtle (also called a baseball turtle, portable batting cage, or roll-away cage) is a mobile, self-contained batting practice station that provides a safe environment for hitters to practice on the field!

Key components:

  • Heavy-duty aluminum frame (typically 2″ diameter tubes)
  • Professional-grade knotless netting (#42 or #60)
  • Wheeled transport system (steers with a dollie)
  • Safety features (huge ball catch area, vinyl skirts, frame padding, thud pads)
  • Foldable or fixed design (for storage)

Why “turtle”? When viewed from the side, the rounded shape and low profile resemble a turtle shell. Plus, they’re durable and protective—just like a turtle!

What can you do with a batting turtle?

Primary uses:

  • Batting practice (live pitching or machines)
  • Tee work and soft toss
  • Fielding drills (hit into cage, for ground ball & outfield throws to “the pot”)
  • Pre game BP
  • Individual player development

Advanced uses:

  • Video analysis (safe contained environment)
  • Multiple station practices (pair with other turtles such as our Doubles Hitter)
  • Portable for travel teams (brings practice anywhere)

Who uses batting turtles?

Organizations that rely on batting turtles:

  • High schools (most common user)
  • Travel ball organizations
  • College programs (D1, D2, D3)
  • Professional teams (minor league)
  • Training academies
  • Recreation departments
  • Private coaches

Why they love them:

  • Portable – use anywhere on field
  • Cost-effective – fraction of permanent cage cost
  • Versatile – multiple practice configurations
  • Safe – protects players, spectators, property

What’s the difference between a batting turtle and a regular batting cage?

Batting Turtle (Portable Cage):

  • ✅ Mobile – moves anywhere
  • ✅ Folds for storage (many models)
  • ✅ No installation required
  • ✅ $4,000-11,000 investment
  • ✅ Sets up in a few minutes
  • ❌ Must be moved/stored
  • ❌ Not permanent

Permanent Batting Cage:

  • ✅ Always ready to use
  • ✅ Can be larger
  • ✅ More protection options
  • ❌ $5,000-30,000+ to install
  • ❌ Fixed location only
  • ❌ May require a building permit/construction
  • ❌ Can’t relocate

Best solution for most programs? Start with a batting turtle. If you outgrow it, add a permanent cage later. Many programs use BOTH.

What’s better: foldable or fixed frame batting turtles?

Foldable Models:

  • ✅ Collapse to 5 feet tall for storage
  • ✅ Easier to store indoors
  • ✅ More portable long-term
  • ❌ Slightly more complex setup
  • ❌ More moving parts (more to maintain)

Fixed Frame (Rolling Pro Models):

  • ✅ Simpler design, fewer parts
  • ✅ No daily setup
  • ✅ Often more stable
  • ❌ Takes up more storage space
  • ❌ Harder to transport off-site

Our recommendation:

  • Foldable if you have limited storage space
  • Fixed frame, if you have the budget, a large enough dedicated storage area, or have owned a foldable and are tired of the daily up-and-down installation. Welded frame, so fewer nuts and bolts to loosen or adjust

Both work great—it’s about your facility’s specific needs… and the budget!
